What Is a Mecanum Wheel?
A Mecanum wheel is a special type of wheel that enables a vehicle to move in multiple directions with high precision and flexibility. Here is a detailed introduction:
Structure
- The Mecanum wheel consists of a central hub and multiple rollers or wheels attached to its periphery at an angle. These rollers are usually arranged in a specific pattern, such as four or more rollers evenly spaced around the wheel.
- The unique design of the rollers allows them to rotate independently and also enables the wheel to move in different directions.
Working Principle
- The key to the Mecanum wheel’s functionality is the inclined rollers. When the wheel rotates, the rollers generate forces in both the forward – backward and side – to – side directions.
- By controlling the speed and direction of rotation of each wheel, it is possible to achieve various types of motion. For example, if all the wheels rotate at the same speed in the same direction, the vehicle moves forward or backward. If the wheels on one side rotate at a different speed than those on the other side, the vehicle turns. Additionally, by adjusting the speeds of the individual wheels in a specific way, the vehicle can move sideways or diagonally.

- High Mobility: It allows for omnidirectional movement, which means the vehicle can move in any direction without having to turn or reposition itself. This is extremely useful in tight spaces or when precise maneuvering is required.
